NEW DELHI: In the by-election for the Khair Assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district, BJP candidate Surendra Diler secured a decisive victory, defeating Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Charu Kain by a margin of 38,393 votes. Surendra Diler garnered 1,00,181 votes, continuing the political dominance of his family in the constituency.

His win marks the third generation of the Diler family to represent the BJP in Khair, following the legacy of his grandfather, Kishan Lal Diler, a six-time MLA and four-time Member of Parliament, and his father, Rajveer Singh Diler, who served as both an MLA and MP.

This election not only reaffirms the BJP’s stronghold in Khair but also highlights Surendra Diler’s successful entry into politics, achieving a victory in his very first election. The vote distribution underscored the BJP’s dominance.

SP’s Charu Kain secured 61,788 votes, while BSP candidate Pahal Singh received 13,365 votes. Other contenders, including ASPA-K’s Nitin Kumar and RSSP’s Bhupendra Dhangar, trailed far behind with 8,269 and 1,143 votes, respectively, while 760 votes went to NOTA.

The by-election was necessitated after BJP MLA Anup Pradhan vacated the seat upon being elected as a Member of Parliament from Hathras in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Pradhan had previously secured a landslide victory in the 2022 by-elections with over 74,000 votes.

Khair has consistently demonstrated high voter engagement, with over 60% turnout in the 2022 Assembly elections.

With this win, the BJP has further solidified its position in the region, maintaining its streak of electoral success in Khair and reinforcing its influence in Uttar Pradesh politics.

Surendra Diler’s victory not only reflects the BJP’s strong grassroots presence but also the continued trust of the electorate in the Diler family’s leadership.
