New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s bail plea in the Delhi excise policy scam case.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for August 23 and has requested a response from the CBI on Kejriwal’s plea.
No one appeared on behalf of the CBI during today’s proceedings, leading the court to issue the notice to the federal agency.
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan was hearing Kejriwal’s petitions seeking bail and challenging the legality of his arrest. The hearing follows the Delhi High Court’s refusal to quash Kejriwal’s arrest.

Kejriwal was first arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) before being taken into custody by the CBI.
He was initially released on interim bail by the Supreme Court to participate in election campaigning. After the interim bail expired, Kejriwal surrendered at Tihar Jail. He then filed a fresh bail plea before the trial court, which granted him bail, but the Delhi High Court stayed this decision. The Supreme Court later granted him interim bail, but in the interim, the CBI rearrested him.
To date, the ED has conducted searches at 245 locations across the country, including Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Mumbai. Fifteen individuals, including Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, and Vijay Nair from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), have been arrested in connection with the case.

The ED has filed one Prosecution Complaint and five Supplementary Complaints so far.
Recently, former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was granted bail by the Supreme Court. The AAP has expressed confidence that Kejriwal, like Sisodia, will also be released on bail.
