NEW DELHI : In a significant development, the Supreme Court has granted bail to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy Scam. Singh was arrested on October 4, 2023, and has been in custody since then.
The apex court’s decision came after the Enforcement Directorate (ED), investigating the case, stated that it had no objection to granting bail to Singh. The court clarified that the concession made by the ED should not be cited as a precedent and that it had not made any comments on the case’s merits.
The court has allowed Singh to continue with his political activities but has asked him to refrain from making any public statements about the case. The Trial Court will fix the terms and conditions of Singh’s release.
During the hearing, Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued that the ED’s approver, Deepak Arora, had made some exculpatory statements and that the ED had failed to find any money trail. Singhvi stated that Singh’s arrest was based on these exculpatory statements. There are allegations that an employee of Arora delivered Rs. 2 crore to Singh’s house on two occasions. The ED has claimed that it has digital evidence against Singh.
Earlier in February, the Delhi High Court had rejected Singh’s bail application. The ED has also filed a chargesheet against Singh in the case.
