New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India welcomed two new Justices, Justices N Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan, in a significant development. These appointments come after the retirement of two Justices, Justice Aniruddha Bose on April 10, 2024, and Justice A S Bopanna on May 19, 2024.
The new Justices
Justice N Kotiswar Singh:
Hailing from Manipur, Justice Singh’s elevation to the Supreme Court marks a historic moment. He becomes the first representative from Manipur to serve in the nation’s highest judicial institution.
His judicial career commenced in 2011 when he was appointed to the Gauhati High Court. In 2013, he was transferred to the newly established Manipur High Court.
Notably, in February 2023, Justice Singh assumed the position of Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court. His retirement is scheduled for February 28, 2025.
With this appointment, Justice Singh will serve as a justice for three more years.

Justice R Mahadevan:
Currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Justice Mahadevan brings extensive experience to the Supreme Court.
His appointment was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium, and Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal confirmed their elevation.
The Honorable President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, officially appointed both justices to the Supreme Court.
With these additions, the Supreme Court’s strength now stands at 34 justices.
The appointment of Justices Singh and Mahadevan reinforces the judiciary’s commitment to upholding justice, constitutional principles, and the rule of law. Their diverse backgrounds and expertise will contribute significantly to the court’s proceedings.
