New Delhi: Sunita Williams, a NASA astronaut, has safely returned to Earth after an extended nine-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Her journey, initially planned as a brief eight-day test flight, turned into an extraordinary odyssey due to technical challenges with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft.

The SpaceX Dragon capsule, named โFreedomโ facilitated the crewโs safe return after a 17-hour journey from the ISS. The spacecraft deployed parachutes for a gentle splashdown off the coast of Tallahassee, Florida, at approximately 3:27 AM IST on March 19, 2025. Recovery teams assisted the astronauts as they exited the capsule, ensuring their well-being after the prolonged mission.

The celebrations were particularly vibrant in Jhulasan, Gujarat, Williamsโ ancestral village. Residents erupted in joy, performing traditional dances, bursting firecrackers, and chanting โHar Har Mahadev.โ A procession featuring her photograph was organized, culminating in a ceremonial extinguishing of the Akhand Jyot (eternal flame) that had been kept burning for her safe return.
