NEW DELHI: Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has set social media abuzz with a light-hearted and controversial comment about Australian bowler Scott Boland during the ongoing India-Australia Test series.

Known for his sharp cricketing insights, Gavaskar showcased his humorous side during live commentary, leaving fans divided over his choice of words.

The moment occurred during Day 3 of the highly anticipated Melbourne Test. As Boland bowled a delivery, Gavaskar quipped, “He’s bowling like he’s got springs in his shoes!”

However, the light-hearted banter took a controversial turn when Gavaskar appeared to nickname Boland as “BO-L,” a remark some perceived as mocking Boland’s surname.

Social Media user, Rosy put out the video and wrote about Sunil Gavaskar fast becoming a BRUTAL Memer , “Sunil Gavaskar is Fast becoming a BRUTAL Memer Listen to what he called Boland”.

The comment quickly became a talking point on social media, with fans and cricket enthusiasts debating whether it was merely playful or crossed a line.

While some viewers found the remark hilarious and part of the fun spirit of commentary, others criticized Gavaskar for being insensitive and unprofessional.

The hashtags #INDvsAUSTest, #Boland, and #SunilGavaskar began trending on Twitter, as fans from both nations joined the conversation.

Boland, who has Indigenous Australian heritage, is a celebrated figure in Australian cricket. Critics of Gavaskar’s remark emphasized the importance of respecting players’ identities, especially in a sport that promotes inclusivity and diversity.

While Gavaskar has not issued a statement addressing the controversy, several former cricketers have weighed in on the matter. Some defended Gavaskar’s comment as harmless humor, while others called for more sensitivity from commentators during live broadcasts.

Boland, known for his consistency and composure, seemed unaffected by the remark, continuing to trouble Indian batsmen with his precise bowling. Gavaskar’s comment, however, added a layer of drama to an already intense Test series.

This is not the first time Gavaskar’s on-air remarks have drawn attention. Over the years, his blend of expertise and humor has made him a fan favorite in the commentary box, though occasional controversies have surfaced.
