NEW DELHI: In an exclusive interview with The New Indian’s Executive Editor Rohan Dua, legendary playback singer Shankar Mahadevan opened up about his iconic songs, collaborations, and unforgettable moments in the music industry.

 

Mahadevan, known for his powerful voice and diverse repertoire, reminisced about his early days in the industry, sharing anecdotes that are nothing short of fascinating.

 

Speaking about his collaboration with Sunidhi Chauhan on the track “Bhumbroo” from Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Mahadevan chuckled, “Sunidhi came in a school uniform to sing ‘Bhumbroo.’ We had so much fun recording that song. It was a blast!”

Mahadevan also spoke passionately about the making of the Kal Ho Na Ho title track. “You can’t plan to make a song timeless, it just happens. That song was meant to evoke emotion, and it connected deeply with people,” he reflected.

 

Mahadevan credited the song’s success to its universal appeal, saying, “When we composed it, the feeling was about the fragility of life, a theme everyone can relate to.”

Mahadevan also shared his experience working with the music director trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. “Ehsaan and Loy are like brothers, ” He said ” We’ve spent countless hours brainstorming ideas, working together seamlessly. It’s always a pleasure to create music with them,

Mahadevan said, adding that his bond with his fellow composers has always been strong, both personally and professionally.

 

 

Reflecting on his career, Mahadevan noted that music is a journey. “I’ve worked with almost every major composer in India from A.R. Rahman to Vishal-Shekhar. But it’s the people you work with that matter the most.”
