NEW DELHI: Rishi Sunak has resigned as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following a resounding defeat for the Conservative Party in the general election. The Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, secured a landslide victory, prompting Sunak to address the nation outside 10 Downing Street, where he accepted responsibility for the electoral loss.
“To the country, I would like to say first and foremost, I am sorry. I have given this job my all, but you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change, and yours is the only judgment that matters. I take responsibility for this loss,” Sunak expressed in his sombre farewell speech. “The Labour Party has won this general election and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory,” Sunak added.

The Conservative Party, under Sunak’s leadership, suffered its worst electoral performance in recent history, prompting him to announce his resignation as party leader once arrangements were in place for selecting his successor.
“I will step down as party leader—not immediately, but once the formal arrangements for selecting my successor are in place. It is important that after 14 years in government, the Conservative Party rebuilds, but also that it takes up its crucial role in opposition professionally and effectively,” Sunak stated, acknowledging the need for renewal within the party ranks. Despite the defeat, Sunak highlighted the achievements of his tenure, emphasizing economic stability, lowered mortgage rates, and enhanced global relations. He also praised the UK’s resilience and prosperity under Conservative governance since 2010.

Reflecting on his political opponent, Keir Starmer, who is poised to become the next Prime Minister, Sunak extended his best wishes, describing Starmer as a “decent, public-spirited man.” He emphasised the importance of unity and understanding during the transition of power. In a significant departure from the political spotlight, Sunak expressed gratitude to his colleagues, family, and the British people, reaffirming his belief in the enduring values of kindness, decency, and tolerance that define the nation.
The transition of power to Keir Starmer marks a new chapter in British politics, as Labour secures a majority in the House of Commons, paving the way for Starmer to assume leadership. As the nation navigates this political shift, Sunak concluded, “This is the best country in the world, and it is thanks entirely to you, the British people—the true source of all our achievements, our strengths, and our greatness.”
