Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena of Delhi on Sunday granted sanction to prosecute the main accused – Aumkeshwar Thakur  in the Sulli deals case.

Sources said with this Delhi Police will now be able to prosecute Thakur, who had created the Sulli deals App and Sulli deals Twitter Handle that indulged in virtual auctioning of Muslim women on social media platforms.

LG has given the permission to prosecute Aumkareshwar Thakur under section 196 of the CrPC. Thakur was arrested in January from Indore, Madhya Pradesh by the cyber cell of Delhi Police. He was booked under section 153A/354A(3) of IPC and 66/67 IT Act. First case was registered against the creator of this app in July, 2021 and later two more complaints were received by the Delhi Police.

Thakur holds a BCA degree from IPS academy in Indore, Madhya Pradesh and lives with his family.

Sources said the LG has noted that he is of the considered view that a prima facie case is made out against the accused, and therefore sanction is granted for prosecuting the accused for the commission of the offences detailed in the FIR.

It may be noted that the said episode of ‘auctioning’ Muslim women on social media platforms in 2021 had created massive outrage and earned severe criticism from all sections of the society.

In the month of March he was granted bail on humanitarian grounds. Besides, Bullibai app creator – Neeraj Bishnoi was also granted bail on the same grounds.

Ever since their bail was granted by court, an outpour was witnessed on social media over the decision. Some gave examples of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam who were still in jail for their first time offences.

Delhi Police said Thakur had created the account @gangescion with the name ‘treadmahasabha’ on Twitter in January 2020. Then he allegedly developed a code for the Sulli Deal app on GitHub. He also gave access to Github to all other members of the group. Then he shared the app on his Twitter account.

From here the process of auctioning starts. The group members would upload the photos of Muslim women with their names and price tag on them.

Following harassment many complaints were received by Delhi Police and Mumbai Police. Both the state Police registered multiple FIRs and later arrested Thakur.

After the uproar regarding the app, Thakur allegedly deleted all his social media footprints. The gadgets recovered from his possession were sent for forensic examination.
