SRINAGAR: Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) Wing of Jammu and Kashmir Police has detained a local resident for allegedly circulating extremist content through social media, officials said on Tuesday.

According to a statement from Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK), an individual operating a radical Facebook page, โ€˜Shaddy Kashmir Dryfruits,โ€™ was tracked down and taken into custody. The page was allegedly being used to spread extremist propaganda aimed at disrupting public order.

After rigorous online monitoring, investigators identified the suspect as Showkat Ahmad Dar, son of Ghulam Ahmad Dar, from Doodh Mohalla, Shalimar, Srinagar.

Authorities stated that Dar was actively involved in posting and sharing material glorifying terrorism and terrorist elements, attempting to fuel anti-national sentiment among young people.

Tracking the suspect proved difficult due to his frequent location changes, but law enforcement devised a coordinated operation to detain him along with his electronic devices.

A preliminary digital forensic examination uncovered access to the radical Facebook account, as well as incriminating content, including videos of slain terrorist Zakir Musa and extremist propaganda, officials confirmed.

Dar has a record of radical activities. He was previously arrested in 2019 by Harwan Police for his involvement in stone-pelting incidents and again in 2022 by Cyber Police Srinagar for disseminating radical material online.

Security officials revealed that social media service providers have set up special monitoring units in collaboration with intelligence agencies in Jammu and Kashmir. These units continuously track and report radical propaganda to authorities, enabling swift intervention.

Such joint operations between security forces, intelligence agencies, and social media monitoring teams have successfully dismantled multiple extremist networks, preventing further radicalization, the statement added.
