Speculation Rife Over Pawan Varma Rejoining JD (U) As He Meets Nitish

Former diplomat and JD (U) national general secretary Pawan Varma met Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday sparking speculation that he may join the JD (U).

Varma was expelled from the party in 2020 for questioning Kumar over his “ideological clarity” on his ties with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Bihar.

Recently, Kumar severed ties with the BJP and joined the mahagathbandhan.

When asked about his plans to rejoin the JD (U), Varma said, “We cannot rule out any possibilities in politics. I haven’t made my decision to join the JD(U), but I am always with Nitish Kumar.”

“Though I was expelled from the party, my relation with the Bihar CM has always been cordial and respectful. I was expelled from the party due to my criticism of NRC (National Register of Citizens) and CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act),” he added

“But I came here (Patna) to express my best wishes to Nitish Kumar on the formation of the mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) government in the state and his decision to quit the NDA,” Varma told to media persons.

However, the buzz is that Varma was called by Kumar with the task to initiate talks with poll strategist Prashant Kishore.

In January 2020, both Varma and Kishore were expelled from the JD (U) from the post of national general secretary and national vice-president, respectively.  Sources said that it was Varma who first introduced Kishore to CM Kumar.

“I am not playing any role of mediation between Nitish ji and Prashant Kishore. It is a baseless rumour. The two leaders understand each other very well. My involvement is not needed for the mediation,” said Varma.
