NEW DELHI: Spanish woman accidentally swallows toothbrush in desperate attempt to clear throat
In a bizarre incident in Galdakao, Spain, a 21-year-old woman named Heizea found herself in a precarious situation after she swallowed her entire toothbrush while attempting to dislodge a piece of food stuck in her throat.

The unusual incident occurred on November 29 when Heizea, enjoying a meal of turkey, began choking on a piece of the dish. With no one else around to assist her, and her father immobilized in a wheelchair due to a damaged Achilles tendon, Heizea decided to take matters into her own hands.

Desperate to clear her airway, she reached for the nearest object she could find, her toothbrush. In her attempt to use the toothbrush to dislodge the obstructing food, it unexpectedly slipped from her grasp and was swallowed whole.

Remarkably, Heizea claimed she felt no pain during the entire ordeal. “Because it was only getting worse, I grabbed the first thing I could get hold of, which was the toothbrush, to try and dislodge it,” she explained.

Upon realizing the toothbrush had been ingested, Heizea was rushed to the hospital. The New York Post reported that hospital staff were initially sceptical until they saw the X-rays confirming the presence of the toothbrush.

During a three-hour examination, surgeons successfully removed the dental device in a 40-minute procedure while Heizea was under sedation. Using surgical twine, they looped the toothbrush head and carefully pulled it back through the oesophagus, eliminating the need for more invasive surgery.

“I woke up with the toothbrush next to me on the bedside table,” Heizea recalled, expressing relief that she could breathe normally again.
