Smriti Irani loses Amethi to Congress’s Kishori Lal Sharma

NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha Polls took a dramatic turn as the fortunes reversed for Smriti Irani, who had previously unseated the three-time Congress winner in Amethi. She faced a significant defeat from Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma.

In an exclusive conversation with Rohan Dua, Executive Editor of The New Indian, during the Lok Sabha elections Smriti Irani said, ‘Amethi, which was a lost constituency now has a location of its missing MP.’ However looking at the votes of Lok Sabha elections 2024 it seems like people have decided to change the location of its MP.

With Kishori Lal Sharma securing 5,39,228 votes, the constituency has returned to the party fold. “I had the support of the Gandhi family and the INDIA bloc. I want to give credit to the Gandhi family for this. Amethi is the land of Gandhi. Humbleness will work in Amethi and not arrogance. All credit for the significant result goes to Priyanka Gandhi,” Sharma said to the media after winning the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

The BJP, which once criticized Congress, alleging that the party leader had fled from Amethi fearing defeat, as Rahul Gandhi changed his constituency this time and decided to contest elections from Wayanad, Kerala, and Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh. However, the criticism has now turned back on the BJP itself after Smriti Irani lost by a significant margin of 1,67,196 votes.

‘Kishori bhaiya, I never had any doubts, I was sure from the beginning that you would win. Hearty congratulations to you and my dear brothers and sisters of Amethi!’, says Priyanka Gandhi after Kishori Lal Sharma gains a huge lead over BJP leader Smriti Irani in Amethi.

Rahul Gandhi, on the other hand, has won from both the seats: the Wayanad Constituency of Kerala and the Raebareli Constituency of Uttar Pradesh.
