NEW DELHI: A delegation headed by India’s Union Minister for Women and Child Development and Minority Affairs Smriti Zubin Irani, and Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs V. Muraleedharan embarked on a ‘historic’ visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Their journey led them to the city of Madinah, a significant pilgrimage site in Islam.

Just two days earlier, India and Saudi Arabia formalised a bilateral agreement, setting a quota of 1,75,025 pilgrims for the upcoming annual Haj pilgrimage. The Bilateral Haj Agreement 2024 was signed in Jeddah between Indian officials and Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah, the Saudi Minister for Hajj and Umrah.

During their visit to Madinah, the delegation explored the vicinity of the revered Prophet’s Mosque, Al Masjid Al Nabwi, in the Markazia area. They also visited the Uhud Mountain, which stands as the final resting place for numerous early Islamic martyrs, and the Quba Mosque, the first Mosque in Islam.

Minister Irani, sharing her thoughts on this significant visit on X (Formerly Twitter), highlighted its symbolic importance. She expressed her appreciation for the cultural and spiritual connection between the two nations, stating, “Undertook a historic journey to Madinah today, one of Islam’s holiest cities included a visit to the periphery of the revered Prophet’s Mosque, Al Masjid Al Nabwi, the mountain of Uhud, and periphery of the Quba Mosque – the first Mosque of Islam. The significance of the visit to these sites courtesy Saudi officials, intertwined with early Islamic history, underscores the depth of our cultural and spiritual engagement.”

A release detailed the delegation’s interactions with Indian volunteers dedicated to serving Indian Haj pilgrims, emphasising their selfless contributions during Haj 2023. They also engaged with Umrah pilgrims from India during the visit.

It stated, “The delegation interacted with Indian volunteers who provide dedicated and selfless service to Indian Haj pilgrims, including during Haj 2023.”

This firsthand experience is expected to offer valuable insights into the preparations required to ensure a comfortable and well-managed Haj 2024 for Indian pilgrims, as stated in the release.
