New Delhi: India’s annual rate of inflation based on the wholesale price index (WPI) eased to 10.7 per cent in September as against 12.41 per cent in August this year, as per the government data released on Friday.

As per reports, this is the 18th month in a row that saw a double-digit WPI inflation in face of the global Covid-19 pandemic that disrupted supply chains across the world.

The WPI reach as high as 15.88 per cent in May this year.

Food inflation based on WPI Food Index also came down to 8.08 per cent in September compared to 9.93 per cent in August this year, according to the government.

The food index decreased from 176 in August to 175.2 in September, the government data showed. The food index consists of ‘food articles’ from the primary articles group and ‘food product’ from the manufactured products group, it said.

“Inflation in September 2022, is primarily contributed by rise in prices of mineral oils, food articles, crude petroleum & natural gas, chemicals & chemical products, basic metals, electricity, textiles etc. as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year,” the ministry of commerce said in a statement.

In the fuel and power category, inflation slightly decreased to 32.61 per cent in September, against 33.67 per cent the previous month. In the basket of manufactured products, inflation came to 6.34 per cent from 7.51 in August.

The provisional figures of WPI will undergo revision as per the final revision policy of WPI, the government informed.

The index number of wholesale prices in India is released by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) on monthly basis on the 14th of every month with a time lag of two weeks of the reference month, as per the ministry.

“The index numbers are compiled with data received from institutional sources and selected manufacturing units across the country,” it added.
