Shreya Ghoshal postpones Kolkata concert amid protests over trainee doctor’s death

NEW DELHI: Celebrated singer Shreya Ghoshal has announced the postponement of her much anticipated “All Hearts Tour” concert in Kolkata, originally scheduled for September 14.

The decision comes in light of ongoing protests sparked by the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, an incident that has shocked the nation.

Shreya on Saturday took to her social media account to announce the decision. In a heartfelt statement shared on her Instagram handle, Ghoshal expressed her deep sorrow and outrage over the crime.

“I am deeply affected by the gruesome and heinous incident that recently took place in Kolkata,” she wrote, describing the brutality of the crime as something that sent “shivers down her spine.”

Coordinating with her promoters at Ishq FM, Ghoshal has decided to reschedule the concert to a new date in October 2024. She emphasised the importance of standing in solidarity with the victims of violence, saying, “It is absolutely imperative for me to take a stand and join you all in solidarity.”

Ghoshal also reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for the respect and safety of women, not just in India but globally. She expressed her hope that fans would understand and support the decision to postpone the concert, adding that all tickets would remain valid for the new date.

“I am hopeful my friends and fans will accept and understand our decision to push this concert,” she said. Ghoshal concluded her message with a call for unity against the “demons of humankind” and a promise to announce the new date soon.

Agnish Roy, a college student, said, “I’ve been eagerly waiting for the show, but this was the right call. Some things are more important.” Similarly, Mohana Paul, a corporate worker and music enthusiast, added, “It is important to stand together for justice.”

Kolkata’s audience, despite their disappointment, has shown strong support for Shreya’s decision. The postponement has drawn significant attention, resonating with a public deeply shaken by recent events. 

Kolkata is currently witnessing unrest following the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in the city. The concert is now expected to take place in October, with the current tickets remaining valid. However, no official date has been announced yet.
