Should PM Modi Meet Didi? Bengal BJP Thinks No

Prime minister Narendra Modi and Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee

NEW DELHI: After meeting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s central leadership thrice in the past two days, the Bengal unit of the party has now sought time with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The series of hectic meetings became important considering that West Bengal Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had sought time to meet PM Modi. Quite understandably, the Bengal unit of the BJP is not in favour of the meeting.

The indomitable Banerjee will be in the national capital this weekend to take part in the governing council meeting of NITI Aayog which will be chaired by the Prime minister.

A source told The New Indian that it is one of those rare occasions when Banerjee finds herself on the back foot, politically. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting Mamata Banerjee will give a political lifeline to her,” the source said.

Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari met Union home minister Amit Shah in the Parliament on Tuesday for 45 minutes. Adhikari apprised the home minister about the current political situation in Bengal.

On the same evening, Bengal BJP president Sukanta Mazumdar met BJP national president JP Nadda and apprised him of the political developments in the state.

Mazumdar also met Shah on Wednesday to apprise him about the current situation in the state.

“On multiple occasions, she had insulted the prime minister by skipping his meetings. She did not even allow the West Bengal chief secretary to make a presentation to the PM when he had visited the state,” the source said.

The buzz in the Bengal unit of the BJP is that it is rare for one to find Banerjee on the backfoot. The ED custody of former Bengal industries minister Parth Chatterjee seemed to have pushed Banerjee into the corner, as Chatterjee is considered to be close to Banerjee.

BJP state leadership feels that Chatterjee had halted, if not ended, Banerjee’s national ambition. They also feel it will be unwise to throw a lifeline to the astute Bengal CM.
