Shopian Targeted Killing: SIT Constituted, 3 Brothers Arrested

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to investigate the targeted killing of a Kashmiri Pandit in Shopian.

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to investigate the targeted killing of a Kashmiri Pandit in Shopian.

J&K Police also said that they have also arrested three brothers for harbouring a terrorist involved in the killing of Sunil Kumar on Tuesday. The incident also saw Kumar’s cousin Pritmber Nath suffering injuries.

According to the police, terrorist Adil Ahmad Wani, a resident of Kutpora in Shopian, is involved in the killing of Kumar from Chotigam in the same district.

According to J&K police, a search operation was launched at his residence in Kutpora in response to an input.When the security forces zeroed in, Wani lobbed a grenade at them. Though the security forces retaliated, Wani managed to escape, taking advantage of the darkness.

According to police, three brothers of Wani were arrested for harbouring a terrorist.The police also said that the process of attaching the house of Wani has been initiated.

On Tuesday, Kumar was killed while his cousin was injured after they attacked their orchard in Chotigam, Shopian. Police said that during the initial investigation, the involvement of an active militant, Adil Ahmad Wani, came to light.

As the security forces intensified their search for the terrorist, the police and security forces received information about the presence of Wani at his ancestral house in Kutpora.

Acting on the input, police, 34 RR and 178 Bn CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in the area in the wee hours of August 17. “During the search operation, militants lobbed a grenade on the search party, which was retaliated against.” However, the militant escaped, taking advantage of darkness,” it said.

Later on, the security forces found a hideout in the house, on the rooftop, where arms and ammunition (one AK rifle along with a magazine and one pistol) were found in the hideout.

“Three people, namely Arif Ahmad Wani, Shabir Ahmad Wani and Touseef Ahmad Wani, were arrested for harbouring militants. The process for attachment of property as proceeds of terrorism has been initiated,” the police said.
