Recently 57 out of 59 accused were arrested in the alleged mass sexual abuse of a Dalit girl in Kerala. Caste-based violence is a deep-seated issue that continues to plague Indian society. The abuse came to light when her teachers noticed changes in her behaviour and informed the District Child Welfare Committee. They in turn then alerted the police. The comprehensive investigation led by a special team under the supervision of IPS officer S Ajitha Beegam resulted in the arrest of most of the accused. Two suspects are currently abroad.

The swift action taken by the Kerala police in arresting the majority of the accused is commendable.
