Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of the late Pranab Mukherjee, recently reposted The New Indian’s interview with her brother Abhijit to criticize him amid their ongoing feud
NEW DELHI: The feud between the children of late President Pranab Mukherjee, Sharmistha Mukherjee and Abhijit Mukherjee, continues to unfold on social media, with Sharmistha recently reposting Abhijit’s interview with The New Indian on X (formerly Twitter) to escalate the ongoing dispute.
In the post, Sharmistha sharply criticized her brother for allegedly changing his stance on the Congress party, which she claims he is trying to rejoin.

“Shame is on the person who, for some petty crumbs, wants to rejoin a party whose followers abuse his father day-in & day-out in the most vilest manner. He is truly ‘dented-painted’. SICK!” she wrote.
The tension between the two siblings began on December 27, when Sharmistha accused the Congress leadership of neglecting their father after his passing in August 2020.

In a post on X, she wrote, “When baba passed away, Congress didn’t even bother to call CWC for a condolence meeting. A senior leader told me it’s not done for Presidents. That’s utter rubbish as I learned later from baba’s diaries that on KR Narayanan’s death, CWC was called & condolence msg was drafted by baba only.”
Her comments came in the context of a larger debate about Congress’s treatment of its former leaders, sparked by a proposal from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge seeking a separate memorial for former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
However, in an interview with ANI on December 29, Abhijit Mukherjee offered a different perspective, defending Congress’s actions during the time of their father’s passing.
“That was (when former President Pranab Mukherjee died) COVID time, there were a lot of restrictions, that’s why people could not gather. Kejriwal’s administration did not allow even a family member to visit, only 20 people from the family and friends were present. Congress also wanted to take out a rally but couldn’t do so, but they came and visited. PM, Rahul Gandhi, and other leaders came,” he stated.

On December 30, Sharmistha once again took to social media to share highlights from Abhijit’s interview with The New Indian, in which he acknowledged Congress’s failure to mention their father’s name at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting.
“I would rather not use the word harsh… That was the time when Congress lost two other stalwarts. While the party paid its respects to the other leaders at the Congress Working Committee meeting, it was heartbreaking to note that my father’s name did not even find a mention. For a person who gave more than fifty years to a party, the treatment meted out to him was uncalled for. This, I feel, is a grudge that people of Bengal hold against the party. They did not treat their most old and loyal leader well,” Abhijit had said in the interview.
