NEW DELHI: Najmul Hossain Shanto, the Bangladesh captain, expressed regret over their insufficient score, stating they should have reached a maximum of 170 runs in the T20 World Cup 2024 match against Australia.
Australia, the 2021 champions, dominated against Bangladesh in all aspects during their 28-run win via the DLS method in their first Super 8 clash of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Bangladesh managed 140/8, while Australia sailed to 100/2 in 11.2 overs and clinched victory via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in a rain-affected match.
Shanto believed in the need to take risks against formidable teams like Australia. The Tigers experimented by promoting Rishad Hossain to number four in the batting lineup. However, the young talent, known for his quick scoring, faced difficulties making an impact with the bat against Australia.

“In a post-match presentation, Shanto commented, ‘The wicket was decent, albeit a bit sluggish. We should have aimed for a minimum of 170 runs. When facing such opponents, taking calculated risks is essential. Today, Rishad Hossain was positioned at number four to counter the spinners. Although known for his power hitting, he couldn’t deliver as expected.'”
Shanto ended a dry spell in the shortest format with a crucial innings of 41 runs off 36 deliveries. He remarked, “I’m doing alright so far, enjoying playing here, and think I can do a bit more,” on his performance.
With less than 48 hours until their next match against India at the same venue, the Tigers’ captain anticipates a stronger performance against the Rohit Sharma-led side following their disappointing defeat today, which significantly impacted their net run rate.
Bangladesh currently occupies the bottom spot in Group 1 of the Super Eight, with a net run rate of -2.471. The captain emphasized the importance of top-order batsmen scoring runs and expressed hope that that the bowlers can maintain their form in the upcoming game against India.
