NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has decided to name Delhi’s Sainik School as Shaheed Bhagat Singh Armed Forces Preparatory School, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced.

In December last year, the Delhi Cabinet had approved the establishment of a special army school in Delhi which will provide training to students to get admitted in the armed forces such as National Defense Academy (NDA), Navy, Air Force, Kejriwal said at a press conference.

The army school will be completely free for students and will be a residential school where students will have to live in hostels. There will be separate hostels for male and female students, he said.

The campus of the new Sainik School is established at Jharoda Kalan on a 14-acre land with state-of-the-art and modern facilities, the chief minister added.

In the Sainik School, students will be taught officer-like qualities just like the training given to youth in the armed forces. Students will be prepared for NDA, naval academy etc. The faculty of the school will include retired army and naval officers, he said.

Any student residing in Delhi will be eligible to take admission in the school. The students will get admission in Class 9 and Class 11. There are 100 seats each in Classes 9 and 11, he said.

The AAP convener informed that so far, 18,000 students have applied for admission and aptitude tests will be conducted on March 27 and 28 for Class 9 and 11, respectively. The aptitude test is phase 1 of the admission process and phase 2 will include interviews of students.

Last year, the government launched four types of Schools of Specialised Excellence (SoSEs) and this school will be the fifth of its kind. The school will be affiliated to Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE).
