New Delhi: The Supreme Court has directed the CBI to submit a progress report on the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case by Thursday. The bench, comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, also instructed the West Bengal government to file a report by August 22 regarding the investigation into the vandalism that followed the crime.
The court expressed strong displeasure at the state’s failure to prevent a large mob from vandalizing the hospital’s emergency ward and other areas on August 15. Despite the chaos, the state did not deploy adequate security to maintain law and order or protect the crime scene, prompting the Indian Medical Association to call for a nationwide withdrawal of emergency services.
The court will revisit the matter on August 22 to review the state’s inaction and the progress of the investigations.
