NEW DELHI: Following assurances from Union Home minister Amit Shah, Olympic bronze medallist wrestler Sakshi Malik resumed her job at Indian Railways on Monday.
On Saturday, Sakshi, along with fellow Olympic bronze medallist wrestler Bajrang Punia, met Home minister Shah at his official residence in New Delhi. It was learned that Shah had assured the wrestlers of a speedy investigation in their protest against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Saran Singh.
Sakshi, Bajrang and Commonwealth and Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat had protested against Singh for sexually harassing women wrestlers, including minors.
They have been protesting at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar for over a month but were removed from the site by Delhi Police when they tried to march towards Parliament on the day of the inauguration of the new building. The wrestlers were later not allowed to continue with their protest at Jantar Mantar.

Following their physical confrontation with the Delhi Police, the wrestlers threatened to immerse their medals in the river Ganga. However, they were talked out of it by farmer leader Rakesh Tikait and others.
Late on Saturday night, Bajrang and Sakshi met Home minister Amit Shah at his official residence. Sources said that they demanded the arrest of Singh. Shah assured them of a speedy investigation and the filing of a chargesheet soon.
On Monday, Sakshi confirmed that she was resuming her job. But the champion wrestler also said that her andolan will continue. She also said that it is sad that people are spreading fake news about their protest.

While sharing a clipping of a news channel, Sakshi tweeted, “This news is completely wrong. In the fight for justice, none of us has backed down, nor will we. Along with Satyagraha, I am fulfilling my responsibility in Railways. Our fight continues till justice is served. Please don’t spread any wrong news.”
Reacting to the same news, Punia tweeted, “The news of withdrawing the movement is just a rumour. These stories are being spread to harm us. We have neither retreated nor withdrawn from the movement. The news of women wrestlers withdrawing FIR is also false. The fight will continue till justice is served.”
