SRINAGAR: Terrorists shot dead a sarpanch in Kulgam district of South Kashmir on Friday evening, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said.
Shabir Ahmed Mir sustained grievous injuries in the firing when he was visiting his native place in the district.
The sarpanch was rushed to a hospital in Kulgam where he succumbed to his injuries, the police said, adding that he had been staying at a secure hotel in Rajbagh area of Srinagar city.
The police said that Shabir was associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, the state BJP said he was not a member of the party.
In a statement, J&K BJP leader Altaf Thakur said, “Strongly condemn yet another barbaric and cowardice act wherein another public representative and the grassroots worker, Shabir Ahmed Mir was killed at Odoura, in Kulgam district.”
He called the killing an attack on democracy. “Such attacks would not be tolerated,” he added.
