NEW DELHI: Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt has been announced as the brand ambassador for Gonasika, the Vizag-based men’s team in the revamped Hockey India League (HIL). The league kicks off on December 28, with Gonasika facing Delhi SG Pipers in the opening match at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, Rourkela.
Known for his iconic roles in movies like Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. and Vaastav, Sanjay Dutt brings star power and enthusiasm to the team. His involvement is expected to draw significant attention to Gonasika and boost the league’s overall appeal.
Speaking about his new role, Dutt said, “I am honoured to be the brand ambassador of Team Gonasika. It’s a privilege to support such a fantastic team as they embark on this exciting journey. I deeply admire Mr Tarini Prasad Mohanty and his son Abrid for their dedication to promoting hockey and empowering young talent. I look forward to cheering for the team and making Vizag proud.”

Dutt also praised the support of key figures like Ramesh DP Das and Stevin Shipping and acknowledged former Indian captain Dr Dilip Tirkey’s role in guiding the team. “I am excited to join the Gonasika family and will be there at the opening ceremony to cheer our players,” he added.
Gonasika boasts a strong mix of seasoned veterans and young talents. Indian stars Manpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh headline the squad, joined by former national players Birendra Lakra, S.V. Sunil, S.L. Uthappa, and Nikkin Thimmaiah. Rising stars like Araijeet Singh Hundal and Vishnukant Singh add fresh energy to the team.
The international roster includes notable players such as FIH Rising Star of the Year 2022 Timothee Clement, Australian Timothy Howard, and a contingent from Great Britain featuring Oliver Payne, Jack Waller, Jacob Draper, Lee Morton, and Struan Walker.

Team owner Tarini Prasad Mohanty expressed his excitement about the season. “Sanjay Dutt’s association brings tremendous energy to Gonasika. His passion for sports and larger-than-life persona will inspire both players and fans. With a balanced team of experienced players and emerging talents, we are confident of setting new benchmarks in the league,” he said.
Under the guidance of Head Coach Jagbir Singh and Mentor M.M. Somaya, Gonasika aims to make a strong impact in the league. Fans eagerly await the opening match on December 28, with hopes high for a successful season ahead.
