NEW DELHI: S. Jaishankar, India’s minister of external affairs, recently spoke on the country’s composed reaction to Donald Trump’s win in the US presidential election. India is relatively unaffected by the political changes, although many other nations are struggling with uncertainty regarding the direction of U.S. foreign policy under Trump’s leadership.

Speaking at the Aditya Birla Group’s 25th silver jubilee scholarship program in Mumbai, Jaishankar clarified that steady diplomatic engagement, rather than political shifts, has been the driving force behind India’s approach to international relations, particularly with the United States. He emphasized how Prime Minister Narendra Modi has effectively developed close ties with several American presidents, such as Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden, proving India’s flexibility in the face of U.S. leadership changes.

Jaishankar noted that India’s expanding foreign footprint, especially in fields like employment, education, and tourism, is a reflection of the country’s changing aspirations abroad. He underlined that India’s curiosity about the globe has grown over time, putting it in a position to use these connections to propel its own growth.

India’s foreign relations are now vital to its growth trajectory, Jaishankar said in his speech, emphasizing the role of foreign policy in furthering national objectives. “Foreign policy now has fundamentally purposed to advancing national development, apart from ensuring national security,” he said. This demonstrates how India’s foreign policy has changed, with strategic and economic expansion now playing a major role in international interaction.

Jaishankar also cited Prime Minister Modi’s prompt congratulations to Donald Trump after his triumph, emphasizing the dedication to bolstering the Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership between the United States and India. Modi stated that he was excited to resume cooperation with the United States in order to advance world peace, stability, and prosperity.

Jaishankar’s comments demonstrate India’s confidence in its ability to adjust to developments on a global scale while putting its development objectives first as the nation advances in the ever-changing political scene.
