NEW DELHI: Calcutta High Court on Sunday ordered to shift arrested All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) Minister Partha Chatterjee to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar from Kolkata’s SSKM Super Speciality Hospital.
The High Court order came after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) approached it challenging a lower court order of sending arrested Bengal minister Chatterjee to state-run SSKM Hospital.
The financial probe agency challenged a Bankshall Court order which directed that Chatterjee be taken to the SSKM hospital on Saturday evening. ED also claimed that the lower court can direct adequate treatment of a person but cannot specify a particular facility.
The ED moved a revision petition before the high court and sought permission for an urgent hearing during the day.
In its order, the High Court said, “The Investigating Agency is directed to take the accused by air ambulance to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar in the early morning on July 25. The accused shall be taken to NSC Bose Airport, Calcutta by an ambulance of S.S.K.M. Super speciality Hospital.”
The HC order said that Chatterjee will be accompanied by a doctor from SSKM Super Speciality Hospital and an advocate for the accused.
“The AIIMS, Bhubaneswar Authority is directed to medically examine the accused by a team of specialist doctors of Cardiology, Nephrology, Respiratory Medicines and Endocrinology. The AIIMS, Bhubaneswar will prepare a report and hand over the copies of the same to the Investigating Officer, Medical Officer of S.S.K.M. Super speciality Hospital and the learned advocate for the accused by 3 pm on July 25,” the court said.
The court also said that the investigating officer shall forward a soft copy of the abovementioned medical report to his counterpart in Calcutta who, in turn, shall produce it before the learned Special Judge under the PML Act.
“The learned Special Judge shall take up the hearing of the case dated June 24 at 4 pm on Monday. The investigating officer shall make necessary arrangements for the production of the accused through the medium of electronic video linkage,” the court ordered.
Chatterjee was arrested on Saturday after over 25 hours of questioning and searches at his premises which led to the recovery of several incriminating documents in connection with the Teachers Recruitment Scam.
The ED also recovered several documents of shell companies.
Besides Chatterjee, the ED also searched the premises of his close associate and actor Arpita Mukherjee from whose premises it recovered Rs 21 crore in cash and jewellery worth Rs 50 lakh. It also recovered foreign currency worth Rs 54 lakh.
Mukherjee was also arrested on Saturday evening.
