Jayant backs Waqf reform, hails justice and Ambedkar legacy

Summary

“Babasaheb was not just a leader for SC/ST communities but a national icon whose ideals continue to guide us,” said RLD Chief Jayant Chaudhary, while announcing a nationwide membership drive and internal party elections. He also addressed the Waqf Board Amendment, AIADMK’s return to NDA, and criticized the West Bengal government for inaction during recent violence.

New Delhi: Union Minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary, addressing a gathering of party leaders and workers in Delhi, underscored the enduring legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, describing him as a “progressive visionary” who shaped India’s Constitution and championed the integration of marginalized communities into the mainstream.
“Babasaheb was not just a leader for SC/ST communities but a national icon whose ideals continue to guide us,” Chaudhary said.

RLD’s Organizational Overhaul

Chaudhary outlined his party’s upcoming initiatives, announcing a six-month nationwide membership drive across villages and cities. This will be followed by internal elections between October 15 and November to elect the next national president.

On AIADMK’s Return to NDA

Commenting on the AIADMK’s re-entry into the NDA fold, Chaudhary termed it a “significant expansion” of the alliance, reflecting public trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Referring to Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent remarks in Parliament, he expressed confidence that the NDA would form the next government in Tamil Nadu.

Waqf Board Amendment & Muslim Leaders’ Support

Addressing concerns over the Waqf Board Amendment Bill, Chaudhary said he held discussions with Muslim leaders, including MLAs and the chairman of the party’s minority wing, before and after its enactment.
“I am still in talks with them, and so far, no one has opposed it. They have not said the party compromised its principles. They believe a solution will emerge,” he stated.

On West Bengal Unrest

Chaudhary also weighed in on the recent violence in West Bengal, questioning why the state government failed to act on time.
“If the situation had been tackled promptly, damage to public and private properties could have been avoided. The government had inputs but did not act,” he said, contrasting it with the RLD’s approach to the Waqf Bill, which he said was passed after due deliberation.
The RLD chief’s remarks come amid heightened political activity ahead of key state elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
