The rift within the Janata Dal (United) seems to be widening. JD(U) state president Umesh Kushwaha on January 30 asked party parliamentary board chairman Upendra Kushwaha to resign from his post.

The move followed Upendra Kushwaha’s latest jibe at party leader and Bihar Chief minister Nitish Kumar. Upendra Kushwaha said that he is not some carrot or radish that JDU leaders will uproot from the party.

The tussle between Nitish Kumar and Upendra Kushwaha started after three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders called on Kushwaha at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where he was admitted for a routine check-up last week.

The speculation regarding Upendra Kushwaha’s next political move took off when Bihar BJP functionaries Prem Ranjan Patel, Sanjay Tiger and Yogendra Paswan posted photos of their meeting with the former Union minister on social media on January 20.

Kushwaha also alleged that the party had become weak and that many leaders within were in touch with the BJP.

On Monday, JD(U) state president Umesh Kushwaha said that JDU is not affected by Upendra Kushwaha’s words and work. “Now, Upendra Kushwaha is holding a personal program on February 2 whereas JD(U) will be holding a ceremony for Jagdev Babu’s (a celebrated revolutionary) birth anniversary in all districts and blocks,” he said.

Umesh Kushwaha said, “It is not proper for any leader of the party to participate in his personal program, it is absolutely the wrong decision. They should not participate in this program.”

When asked about the recent war of words between Nitish Kumar and Upendra Kushwaha, Umesh Kushwaha said, “Before speaking about Nitish Kumar, one should think about how much he has done for the development of the party and the state. Therefore, if Upendra Kushwaha has to say anything, he will have to resign from the party first, and only then will it be possible.”

On January 26, Nitish Kumar also asked his party colleague to quit the party. The former union minister said he wouldn’t quit the party without his share.

Kushwaha further said that Nitish Kumar had not spoken to him for even five minutes in the last two years to discuss the functioning of the party.

It is speculated that Upendra Kushwaha is not happy to see Nitish Kumar promoting Deputy Chief minister Tejashwi Yadav as his successor. Apparently, Upendra Kushwaha had merged his party with JD(U) with the aim to succeed Nitish Kumar one day.
