GUWAHATI: A significant meeting of 15 opposition parties in Assam was convened on Thursday, as they collectively prepared for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections. The meeting, held in Guwahati, addressed crucial strategies for the upcoming electoral battle, primarily focusing on “concrete decisions” related to candidate selection and the formulation of a common minimum programme for the Lok Sabha Polls in 2024.
The alliance comprises a diverse range of political parties, including the Indian National Congress (INC), Trinamool Congress (TMC), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Shiv Sena, JDU, CPIM, as well as regional allies such as the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and the Raijor Dal (RD).
During the press briefing following the meeting, the Assam Congress Chief Bhupen Borah emphasised that their core objective is to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “We have gotten together to create a consensus among the allies. Our main agenda is to create a common minimum programme among the parties,” he said.
The alliance’s shared commitment also extends to advocating for the reinstatement of the Old Pension Scheme if they secure power in the upcoming elections. Bora added, “We discussed the price rise and we created a unity committee that will decide how to go to the public. Most important will be a draft of a common minimum programme by TMC Chief Ripun Bora which will be submitted in the coming Dibrugarh Sabha of the alliance.”
Addressing concerns about seat allocation among the coalition members, Borah conveyed that the alliance stands ready to make any necessary sacrifices to preserve and uphold the principles of democracy.
This high-level meeting was particularly significant as it unfolded amidst speculation about potential discord within the opposition bloc, INDIA, following statements made by Bhupen Borah, suggesting that the party would “contest in 14 seats” in the upcoming general elections.
