NEW DELHI: Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India’s most celebrated cricketers, recently announced his retirement from international cricket, capping off a stellar career that spanned over a decade. Known for his mastery of off-spin and ability to adapt to diverse conditions, Ashwin’s contribution to Test cricket has been monumental.
Since making his Test debut in 2011 against the West Indies, Ashwin quickly established himself as a key player in India’s bowling lineup. His numbers speak volumes about his consistency and brilliance: 537 wickets in 106 matches at an average of 24. These achievements make him India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, only behind the legendary Anil Kumble, who took 619 wickets. Ashwin also holds the distinction of being the fastest bowler to reach 300 Test wickets, achieving this milestone in just 54 matches and breaking Dennis Lillee’s long-standing record.

Ashwin’s success was not confined to Indian conditions, though he remains a dominant force on home soil. His ability to outthink batsmen and exploit turning tracks made him a nightmare for visiting teams. He played a pivotal role in India’s numerous home Test victories, forming an unstoppable partnership with fellow spinners like Ravindra Jadeja. Notably, Ashwin’s performances were critical in India’s back-to-back Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumphs over Australia, where he consistently troubled some of the world’s best batsmen.
Apart from his bowling brilliance, Ashwin also excelled with the bat, making him a true all-rounder. He has scored over 3,000 runs in Tests, including five centuries, with a highest score of 124. His batting often rescued India from challenging situations, proving his worth as a lower-order batsman.
