NEW DELHI: Afghanistan’s cricket captain Rashid Khan has recently taken a bold stance against the Taliban’s restrictions on women’s education. In a heartfelt social media post Rashid expressed his deep concern over the recent ban on medical training for women and emphasized the importance of education for all.

“Learning knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim man and woman,” Rashid tweeted. “I am saddened and disappointed by the news about the closure of education and medical departments in front of the sisters. It’s very painful to see pictures of sisters and mothers on social media and depression.”

Rashid further highlighted the critical shortage of female healthcare professionals in Afghanistan. Stressing that the country desperately needs professionals in every field and especially in the medical sector. “The acute shortage of female doctors and nurses is particularly concerning, as it directly impacts the healthcare and dignity of women,” he added.

The Taliban’s recent decision to ban women from studying health-related fields such as midwifery and nursing has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation. Rashid’s appeal for the reconsideration of this decision has resonated with many, both within Afghanistan and globally.

Rashid’s advocacy for women’s education is part of a broader movement to ensure that Afghan women have access to the same opportunities as men. The ban on medical education is just one of many restrictions that have been imposed on women since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.

“Providing education to all is not just a societal responsibility but a moral obligation deeply rooted in our faith and values,” Rashid concluded. “I hope that this decision will be reviewed and our sisters will be provided with education according to the principles of the holy religion.”
