Speaking to the media on the occasion, Ramdev appealed to non-government organisations (NGOs) and trusts to come forward to help people of Joshimath.
Yoga guru Ramdev on Tuesday dispatched two trucks loaded with daily-use items and 2000 blankets for the residents of Joshimath town, who battle severe cold as they watch their homes sinking – literally!
Hit by land subsidence, more than 560 residential, commercial and government buildings have developed major cracks, affecting over 2000 families. Some of them are too dangerously damaged to live in.
A founder of Haridwar-based Patanjali Ayurved, Ramdev flagged off two trucks carrying relief material from the Divya Yoga temple in Kankhal, in the city. His close associate Acharya Balkrishna will distribute these items to people in Joshimath on Wednesday.
Speaking to the media on the occasion, Ramdev appealed to non-government organisations (NGOs) and trusts to come forward to help people of Joshimath.
“People have lost all of their wealth, investments and houses and forced to live like refugees. On a humanitarian basis, people should come forward for help,” said Ramdev.
He further said that Patanjali Yogapeeth is very sensitive organisation towards the welcome of people of Uttarakhand.
Due to land subsidence, more than 81 families have been shifted to safe buildings in Joshimath town even as the government works on an ambitious plan to shift thousands of affected people to nearby towns like Pipalkoti.
More than 600 buildings have been declared unsafe for human habitat. Locals have accused the government of not paying heed to public pleas for a timely solution. They have blamed two tunnels being dug as part of NTPC’s Tapovan-Vishnugad Hydroelectric Project for the cracks in their homes.
200 people have been evacuated over the past few days. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has inspected the situation in Joshimath and assured locals of all possible help.
Situated at a height of 6,000 feet, this town in Chamoli district is a gateway for Hindu and Sikh pilgrims to travelling to Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib. Locals claim governments have been apathetic towards the plight of residents even as this situation has persisted for a year now.
Government of India agencies and experts are assisting the state government to prepare short, medium and long-term plans.
A team of NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and four teams of the SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) have already been deployed at Joshimath.
