PATNA: In a major setback to controversial Bihar minister Chandra Shekhar’s elder brother has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and criticized his younger brother for his disparaging comments against Ramcharitmanas.

Ramchandra Prasad Yadav, a retired history professor from Delhi University, was welcomed in the BJP by Bihar state unit chief Samrat Chaudhary and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in Patna on Friday.

Earlier this year, Chandra Shekhar stirred a controversy by claiming that some verses in the Ramcharitmanas, a version of Ramayan written by 16th-century Bhakti poet Tulsidas, are discriminatory against Dalits, and demanding their removal.

Speaking to media persons after his joining, Yadav criticised his younger brother for making controversial comments without the knowledge of the subject.

“Such comments are absolutely inappropriate and should not be made against any religious texts. Furthermore, Ramcharitmanas is written in Awadhi language and any person who is not well versed in Awadhi can’t decipher it precisely,” he said.

Speaking out against his brother, Yadav highlighted that those who have studied the Ramayana would not make contentious remarks about it and demanded an explanation from his brother regarding the motivations behind such statements.

In his scathing remarks, the elder brother accused minister Chandra Shekhar of lacking a comprehensive understanding of history, suggesting that his limited academic exposure may be a contributing factor.

He further criticized recent policy changes that could adversely affect employment opportunities for the people of Bihar.

He noted that it was not uncommon for individuals in the country’s political landscape to have spouses aligned with different parties. While acknowledging Chandra Shekhar’s inclination towards the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Ramchandra Prasad made it clear that his preference lay with the BJP.

He also said that it is not necessary for family members in politics to share the same viewpoints.

“Take finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, for example. While she is a minister in the BJP government, her husband Parakala Prabhakar is a vocal critic of the BJP government,” he added.
