PUNE: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted the government’s determination to transform the Indian Armed Forces into a modern and self-reliant force during the 77th Army Day celebrations yesterday. Addressing the event ‘Gaurav Gatha,’ he emphasized the evolving nature of global conflicts and urged the Armed Forces to remain vigilant and prepared.

 

The Defence minister underlined the increasing role of unconventional warfare, including cyber and space domains, in modern conflicts. “Wars are becoming more unpredictable and violent. The emergence of non-state actors and rapid technological advancements necessitate holistic reforms and capacity building in our Armed Forces,” he stated.

 

Rajnath Singh stressed the importance of achieving strategic autonomy through self-reliance. “India cannot depend on other nations for its security. We are manufacturing military equipment domestically and exporting them. Last year, domestic defence production reached Rs 1.27 lakh crore, with exports exceeding Rs 21,000 crore,” he said.

He also highlighted initiatives such as positive indigenization lists comprising over 5,500 items and declared 2025 as the ‘Year of Reforms’ for the Ministry of Defence to accelerate modernization.

 

Shri Rajnath Singh paid homage to soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for the nation. He commended the Armed Forces for their role in safeguarding borders, responding to natural disasters, and exemplifying India’s humanitarian values globally. “The might of our Armed Forces ensures peace and deters adversaries,” he added.

 

The Raksha Mantri launched several initiatives:

Army Paralympic Node: Established in Pune to support Divyang soldiers in international events like the Paralympics.

 

Bharat Ranbhoomi Darshan App: A platform for citizens to explore historical war zones and learn about India’s military heritage.

 

Commemorative Medallion: Released to mark the 352nd Coronation of Shivaji Maharaj.

 

The event featured a grand showcase of the Indian Army’s evolution through seven segments:

 

Yudh Kala: Highlighted traditional martial arts like Kalaripayattu and Mallakhamb.

 

Yudh Pradarshan: A tactical raid demonstration, showcasing the Army’s operational readiness.

Pracheen Ranneeti: Depicted ancient warfare strategies from Indian epics.

Samarth Bharat Saksham Sena: Showcased the Army’s role in nation-building and technological advancements.

 

The celebrations included several awards:

 

Best Marching Contingent: Bombay Engineers Group and Centre.

 

Nepali Army Band: Honored for its first participation in the Army Day Parade.

 

NCC Girls Contingent: Recognized for their debut, symbolizing women’s empowerment.

 

Mission Olympics Tableau Team: Celebrated for showcasing India’s Olympic achievements.

 

Gaurav Kalash by Cyclothon Team: Represented India’s military heritage by collecting water from Shivaji’s forts.
