NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rajeev Shukla is trending on social media through memes. He is depicted as the omnipresent Betaal or Orry of cricket, appearing alongside cricketers since 2004.

Shukla trended after posting a photo on X (formerly Twitter), holding the T20 World Cup trophy beside Virat Kohli and BCCI secretary Jay Shah.

“Delighted to meet #TeamIndia after their stellar victory in the #T20IWorldCup and congratulate them on behalf of the nation. We look forward to joining you all in the celebrations in Mumbai with the esteemed trophy!” he tweeted.

In one meme, Rajeev Shukla is seen on the back of Indian Captain Rohit Sharma akin to the mythological Vikram and Betaal story. Another meme portrays Jay Shah in shock asking, “When did you come?” to which Shukla responds, “I came before anyone else.” The meme humorously criticizes Shukla for his presence at every match and celebration.

Shukla attended the T20 World Cup final match and the Mumbai parade.

Rajeev Shukla is the Vice President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Previously, he served as the Chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Born on September 13, 1959, Rajeev Shukla started his career as a journalist before entering politics. He is related to BJP leader and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

During the UPA government, Rajeev Shukla was part of the Manmohan Singh cabinet. He is known to maintain good relations with leaders across political parties.

In 2022, Rajeev Shukla was credited with Congress’s victory in Himachal Pradesh. He serves as the in-charge of Himachal Pradesh Congress. During crises faced by the state government, Shukla effectively managed the situation, enabling the fragile government in Himachal Pradesh to survive.
