Rahul shoots the messenger again, says — why do you say only what BJP says

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has once again sparked controversy with his behavior towards the media. On Tuesday, as he walked towards Congress Headquarters in the national capital, a reporter asked him about the BJP’s claims of “pressurising the judiciary”. However, instead of answering the question, Gandhi mocked the journalist by asking, “Why do you always say what BJP says?”

This is yet another instance of Gandhi’s dismissive attitude towards the media’s questions. He attempted to shift the conversation by launching a counter-attack on the BJP, asking who the Rs 20,000 crore lying in shell companies of Adani belonged to. “Rs 20,000 crores are lying in shell companies of Adani. Who does this money belong to?” asked the Congress leader.

Earlier, on Saturday, during a press conference about his disqualification from Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi faced a significant backlash for what was deemed as arrogance towards a  journalist. He scolded the journalist over a question, leading to condemnation from political leaders and journalists across different media outlets. The journalist in question had been covering the Congress party for 15 years. Rahul Gandhi accused the journalist of working for the BJP and lost his temper, asking him to become a “better pressman.”

On several occasions Gandhi used pejorative adjectives for journalists calling them “pliable”.

On Monday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi received bail in the ‘Modi surname’ remark defamation case from 2019, and his two-year prison sentence has been suspended pending a decision on his appeal, which challenges his conviction. The court in Gujarat will hear his appeal on April 13th. More than two dozen top leaders and MPs from Congress have gathered in Surat, but the BJP has questioned Rahul’s party for their visit to the area.

Leaders including General Secretary Ajay Maken, Punjab MLA Pratap Bajwa, and Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel and Priyanka Gandhi, flew to Surat with Rahul in an Indigo flight.

The BJP was quick to criticize the move, calling it “pressure tactics” and “tamasha” by Rahul Gandhi to influence the judiciary. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra accused Gandhi of making derogatory remarks about the OBC community and seeking to pressurize the country’s judiciary. “Rahul Gandhi made shameful remarks about the OBC community. Now, he is making a ‘fanfare movement’ to Surat with lots of people. Is this the way to appeal? Rahul Gandhi is trying to pressurise the country’s Judiciary,” said BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra.
