NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi staged a protest in Parliament on Thursday, Dec 5, wearing t-shirts printed on the back with the slogans “Modi Adani ek hai, Adani safe hai.”

The protest calls for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the allegations against billionaire Gautam Adani. The protesters, including lawmakers from Congress, RJD, and the Left, raised the slogan “Modi Adani ek hain.”

In their protest against the central government over Gautam Adani, they are demanding a thorough investigation into the Adani Group’s business dealings and its alleged ties to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Speaking at the protest, Rahul Gandhi remarked, “Modi ji can’t get Adani ji investigated because if he does, he would be getting himself investigated… Modi aur Adani ek hain. Do nahi hain, ek hain.”

The protest was sparked by the indictment of Gautam Adani and his nephew, Sagar Adani, by US prosecutors on charges of bribery and fraud. Opposition leaders have been pressing for a JPC inquiry, arguing that the scandal implicates both the Adani Group and the government.

The protest took place near the Makar Dwar steps of Parliament, following an advisory from the Lok Sabha Secretariat, which had directed MPs to avoid protests at the usual Parliament gates for safety reasons. The protesters raised slogans demanding accountability and a parliamentary discussion on Adani’s indictment.

While Congress and several opposition parties, including the AAP and the Left, participated in the protest, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) distanced itself from the issue. The Congress party, along with other opposition groups, has called for an immediate JPC probe into the matter, with Rahul Gandhi even demanding Adani’s arrest.

The Adani Group has denied all allegations, calling them baseless, while the opposition continues to push for an investigation into the financial practices of the conglomerate.
