NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police on Monday detained several doctors who were protesting against the delay in the NEET 2021 counselling. Doctors claimed that they were brutally thrashed and manhandled while holding a peaceful march towards the Supreme Court and threatened to shut down all healthcare institutions in Delhi.

The protest was organised by the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA). The president of the association, Dr Manish, is amongst those who have been detained.

In a statement issued by FORDA, the association claimed “police brutality” and called it a “Black day in the history of the medical fraternity”. It condemned police action and announced that all healthcare institutions would be completely shut down from today.

“Resident Doctors, the so-called ‘Corona Warriors’, protesting peacefully to expedite NEET PG Counselling 2021 were brutally thrashed, dragged and detained by the police. There will be a complete shutdown of all Healthcare Institutions from today onwards!” the statement read.

Further, they demanded the immediate release of all detained representatives of FORDA as well as resident doctors.

About 5,000 resident doctors across government hospitals in Delhi began another round of strike against the delay in NEET-PG counselling and admission process on December 17. The NEET exams which were scheduled for May, were postponed to September due to the second wave of COVID-19.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi also slammed the central government saying showering flowers on the doctors was a PR stunt whereas in reality injustice is being carried out against them.

“Showering flowers was the PR show off, in reality injustice is pouring in. I am with Covid warriors against the tyranny of the central government,” he said in a tweet attaching a video where the Delhi Police personnel were seen forcefully detaining the protesting doctors.

The remarks of the Congress leader came as a reaction to detaining of resident doctors, who were marching to the Supreme Court in protest against the delay in NEET 2021 counselling, by the Delhi Police.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had led from the front in highlighting the role of doctors during the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic. Choppers were used to shower the flower petals on the doctors.
