NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha session today was marked by significant legislative developments and dynamic interactions among parliamentarians. A noteworthy incident involved a heated exchange between Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Member of Parliament (MP) Raghav Chadha and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who was presiding over the proceedings.
The session commenced with discussions on various legislative matters, including the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025, aimed at reforming the administration and management of Waqf properties in India.
The debate was extensive, reflecting the bill’s complexity and significance. Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju addressed the House, refuting opposition claims and emphasizing that the bill would benefit millions within the Muslim community. He highlighted that several suggestions from the Joint Parliamentary Committee had been incorporated into the revised bill, underscoring the government’s commitment to inclusive development.
The Exchange Between Raghav Chadha and Vice President Dhankhar
During the proceedings, MP Raghav Chadha sought to raise a point of order. Vice President Dhankhar addressed him, stating:
“You are very severely obsessed with this issue of what Trump is doing or someone else is doing. The minister has categorically stated, ask your second supplementary, which is little Indianized.”
Chadha responded assertively, emphasizing his dedication to India’s interests:
“Sir, I am severely obsessed with anything that hurts the Indian interest and particularly the Indian economic interest and that is what brings me to this house and I will continue to passionately raise every issue.”
Chadha clarified the focus of his inquiry:
“Sir, if you had heard my question, you would have understood that it is only and only about India.”
Parliamentary Conduct and Procedural Observations
This exchange underscores the dynamic nature of parliamentary proceedings, where members actively engage in discussions concerning national interests. Such interactions highlight legislators’ commitment to addressing issues impacting India’s economic and strategic interests.
Vice President Dhankhar’s remarks also shed light on the challenges presiding officers face in maintaining order and decorum while ensuring that all members have an opportunity to participate in legislative processes.
