NEW DELHI: Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un exchanged lavish gifts during Putin’s visit to North Korea, marking his first visit in 24 years. Kim warmly greeted Putin, and the streets of Pyongyang were adorned with decorations for their meeting.
After a private discussion, Putin gifted Kim a luxury Aurus limousine and a tea set, described as a “perfect present.” Artwork related to Putin’s image, including busts, was also part of the gifts exchanged, according to media sources.
Russia and North Korea have a complex history of diplomatic and military ties dating back to the Cold War era. During that time, they were both part of the communist bloc, with the Soviet Union providing significant support to North Korea, including economic aid, military equipment, and technical assistance.

In recent years, their relationship has gained renewed attention due to shared concerns over international security issues. Following their talks, Russian President Putin and North Korean President Kim signed a “strategic partnership treaty,” signaling a deepening of ties between Russia and North Korea. Despite international isolation, both countries showed unity, especially in the face of Western concerns about their relationship and fears of North Korean weapons being used in Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.
North Korean President Kim Jong Un, known for his love of luxury vehicles, owns several high-end cars, including Maybach, Mercedes, Rolls-Royce, and Lexus SUVs. However, it remains unclear which Aurus model Kim received this time.

The exchange of gifts and the signing of the partnership treaty highlights the growing bond between Russia and North Korea, particularly since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The West is worried about the relationship between Moscow and Pyongyang, fearing that Russia is using North Korean weapons in its military actions in Ukraine.
