Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday alleged that Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit has overstepped the sanctity of the democratic institution by first cancelling the session of the Vidhan Sabha and then asking for the ‘List of Business’ of the next session that had been called.

Flaying the move, AAP chief spokesperson and MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj said: “The Punjab Governor isn’t some school principal, his behaviour is against the tenets of democracy; such actions will lead to the end of democracy.”

Bhardwaj said: “There hasn’t been a single case in the last 75 years where a governor has audaciously asked for the ‘List of Business’ to be sent to him before calling a Vidhan Sabha session. We’ve seen such antics in Delhi too. Ever since CM Arvind Kejriwal came to power, the LG started infringing upon every task his government took up; it never happened before 2014. After Delhi, now the Governor of Punjab is placing roadblocks in the way of the AAP Government.”

He added that he was shocked that despite the presence of senior advisors and officials of the Governor’s Secretariat, the Governor of Punjab was overstepping all boundaries. “In the case of Delhi too, we’ve seen the Lt Governor overstep and infringe upon CM Arvind Kejriwal’s work. Every time this has happened in the last 7 years, the BJP has defended its nominee saying Delhi is not a full state. And this is despite the fact that Delhi used to run like any other state before 2014 while being not a half state. The Lt Governor didn’t overstep back then,” he added.

Bhardwaj said in the last seven years, be it constructing a Mohalla Clinic or installing a CCTV, the Lt Governor — acting upon the behest of the BJP and its Central Government — has put obstacles in every task taken up by CM Kejriwal. Now, the Punjab Governor has taken up the same role.”

He said, “If he (Punjab Governor) wants to act like this, then there is no point of having a democracy. Is he a governor of a state of some British Viceroy? Perhaps, he thinks of himself as Lord Mountbatten and that he can go around dictating a government. AAP vehemently condemns this. The Punjab Governor must immediately take cognizance of the morality attached to his role,” Bhardwaj added.
