As Indian batting sensation Ishan Kishan scored the fastest double hundred in the history of the One Day Internationals (ODIs) in Chattogram on Saturday, many broke in celebrations more than 1000 km away in Patna, his home city.
He achieved the feat by smashing 200 off 126 balls at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram city of Bangladesh. With this, Ishan also became the fourth Indian batsman after Sachin Tendulkar, Virendra Sehwag, and Rohit Sharma to score a double century in an ODI match.
The Bihari lad hit 34 boundaries – 24 fours and 10 sixes to score 210 in 131 deliveries, helping ‘the Men in Blue’ rack up 409/8 after being put in to bat in the third ODI against the hosts.
At his residence in Patna, Ishan’s family members could not contain the joy. “Today, I feel proud that I gave birth to Ishan. I wish he performs well in all three formats – ODI, Test, and T20I,” declared his mother Suchitra Singh.
“I am very happy that he contributed to India’s victory. Since his childhood, Ishan has been putting up a different game,” she said, her eyes welling up in joy.
Kishan was included in the playing eleven after Rohit Sharma’s injury. He joined hands with Virat Kohli to steady the innings. They played a stable partnership of 290 runs.
His father is getting congratulatory messages from friends and well-wishers as supporters started distributing sweets outside his residence.
“The way he played today, the way he started the innings displays his maturity. It is a proud moment for the family and the people of Bihar and Jharkhand,” said an elated Pranav Pandey told The New Indian.
He further said: “I wish he continues to contribute to India’s victories. If he can manage a consistent performance, he will definitely keep a spot reserved for him in the team.”
In the match, Ishan’s first fifty came up in just 49 balls and another fifty off 36 balls, completing his maiden ODI century.
Social media also erupted in celebrations, with Indian veteran Ravi Shastri leading congratulatory wishes.
“Exuberance of youth at its best. Well done. As a youngster this is how you catch the bull by the horns and grab your opportunity with both hands,” he tweeted.
Former Indian cricketer Venkatesh Prasad wrote: “Take a bow Ishan Kishan. Fastest double hundred in the history of the game. This is the way that India has to adopt. Might not come off on a few days but any day a better approach. Such a joy to watch (sic).”
