Hundreds of students took to the streets late on Saturday after a female student at a private university in Chandigarh allegedly leaked objectionable videos of other students.

The videos of nearly 60 female students taking baths became viral on social media. The female student, who had leaked the videos, has been taken into police custody, said officials.

While there are reports of one of the affected students collapsing and being rushed to hospital after the video went viral, the police have termed the reports of attempted suicide by affected students as fake news.

The police said that they are investigating the matter and also verifying claims by the woman that she was blackmailed by a man to leak the videos.

Police have also registered a case against the accused woman under section 354C pertaining to voyeurism under the Indian Penal Code and Section 66E of the Information Technology Act (punishment for violation of privacy) at Kharar (Sadar) police station.

Talking to the media, Mohali SSP Vivek Soni said, “The woman had admitted that she had sent her photographs to her friend. But we were verifying whether she had sent pictures of other girls as well. We are investigating the matter. There was a protest and everything is under control.”
