LUCKNOW: The Congress will contest the 2022 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh with party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the party’s face and the Congress Working Committee (CWC), party’s highest decision-making body will decide on the chief ministerial candidate.
In a candid conversation with the The New Indian at the party office here, Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Lallu also said that the grand old party is the main opposition party in the state and that the people are angry with the BJP.
When asked about the party’s prospects in the state, where it has been out of power for last 32 years since 1989, Ajay Kumar Lallu said, “Congress is the main and strong opposition in Uttar Pradesh at the moment. Congress has raised issues of all employment of youths, women safety and several other issues prominently.” TRIPURA EXPOSE: Govt Land Claimed As Mosque, Witnesses Say Never Saw Namazis; 21-Day Delayed Plaint Punches Holes In Arson Theory
“The Congress has worked for people in the state. The party workers provided medicines, oxygen and other essential items to the people during the two waves of the Covid pandemic. And now people are getting connected with the party once again,” the Congress leader said.
Asserting on the issues raked by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is also the party’s in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, he said, “Congress has raised issues of women safety and party leader Priyanka Gandhi fought for the justice of daughter of Unnao, Hathras and several others at different places in the state.”

He also said that she fought for the MSP of the crops, issue of stray animals which are the main cause of farmers crop loss.
“Now people are looking at her with a lot of hope. And I think that Congress is the only hope and option for the people of the state,” he said.
To a question Priyanka Gandhi announcing to field 40 per cent candidates in upcoming assembly elections and if the party have enough faces to contest on all seats, Ajay Kumar Lallu said, “I should not feel bad to say that all political parties mocked that Congress does not have organisation. Today whether it is village and district level party is having a candidate at all level in the state.”
He said that during the last two years around 20,000 party workers were sent in jail. “It was Congress which was visible on ground while the parties which got the votes to be the main opposition, however, did not raise the issues of people and were also not visible on streets,” he said.
Under Priyanka Gandhi people are seeing a fresh hope in the state and the party is going to make a strong comeback in the state
When asked if there is any Prime Minister Narendra Modi wave in the state like it was in 2014, 2017 or 2019, he said: Today people are facing inflation, prices of LPG cylinders, fertilizers, fuel prices all have sky rocketed. Even farmers are unable to get the price for their produce. Today people are unable to earn their livelihood and about 70,000 small and medium factories closed in Ghaziabad
Citing example of traditional industries like carpet industry of Bhadohi, chikan workers of Lucknow, brass industry of Moradabad, jar industry of Bareilly, leather industry of Kanpur, he said all of these industries are facing their worst time.
“The government (BJP government) which talked about investor meet in the state has failed to get employment opportunities for people. All the industries of Uttar Pradesh are facing worst time. Even the work done by the Congress before 1989 and the industries which were opened by the party are on the verge of closure,” he said, adding that the BJP is boasting of the scheme of National Food Security Act, which was launched by the Congress government.
Attacking the ruling Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government, he said:
The BJP has been unable to create the employment opportunities in the state. The government is focusing on contractual jobs and even railways is robbing people by just putting zero before the train numbers while mentioning it as a special train
People in the state are angry with the BJP rule and their anger will be visible during the 2022 assembly polls and Congress will form its government
He said that the party will form the government in majority in the state as the people are ready to accept the grand old party.
To a question that Priyanka Gandhi has been the face of party in Uttar Pradesh but the party has not announced any Chief Ministerial candidate, he said, “Priyanka Gandhi has been working very hard in the state and she is also the in-charge of the party so we are fighting the elections under her.”
And the Chief Minister of the state will be decided by the Congress Working Committee (CWC) in Delhi
The assembly elections in the Uttar Pradesh are scheduled early next year. The BJP has stormed to power in the state in 2017 by winning 313 out of the 403 seats. The Congress and the Samajwadi Party alliance failed miserably in the state in 2017 assembly elections.
The assembly elections has also become interesting as Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 20 announced to repeal the three farm laws.
