President Murmu: India sees Malaysia as strong partner in ‘Global South’

NEW DELHI: President Murmu warmly welcomed the Malaysian Prime Minister, highlighting the shared values of democracy, multiculturalism, pluralism, and mutual respect that have long guided the relationship between India and Malaysia.

She expressed satisfaction with the recent decision to elevate India-Malaysia relations by upgrading their partnership to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The President noted that both nations are working towards an action-oriented roadmap to implement this partnership across various sectors.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim was called on by the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, at Rashtrapati Bhavan today on Aug 20.

In her remarks, President Murmu emphasized that India views Malaysia as a strong partner in the Global South, ASEAN, and within India’s Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific vision. She extended her best wishes to Malaysia for its upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025, reaffirming India’s commitment to working closely with Malaysia to achieve shared goals for a peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

President Murmu also took the opportunity to convey her congratulations to the King of Malaysia, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, on his recent coronation, through Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

During the visit India and Malaysia also signed multiple agreements aimed at bolstering cooperation in various fields, including labour and employment, Ayurveda and traditional medicine, digital technologies, culture, tourism, youth and sports, public administration, and governance reforms. These agreements were formalized following delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in New Delhi.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim is on a three-day state visit to India from August 19-21, 2024. This marks Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s first official visit to India since assuming office.

The visit by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is seen as a significant step in deepening the strategic ties between India and Malaysia, laying the groundwork for enhanced cooperation in the years to come.
