Bharatiya Janata Party Delhi Chief Adesh Gupta has resigned from the post after BJP’s defeat in Delhi Municipal Corporation elections. Ending 15 year old rule by BJP, the Aam Aadmi Party emerged as the single largest party in MCD polls with 134 seats, restricting BJP to 104 seats. Taking moral responsibility of this debacle Adesh Gupta has submitted his resignation to the party’s national president JP Nadda.
BJP has accepted his resignation and after him Virendra Sachdeva has been made the working president. In the MCD elections, the BJP could not get a seat even where Adesh Gupta lives.
A press-release signed by National General Secretary Arun Singh read, “As per directions given by National Party President of the BJP JP Nadda, Adesh Gupta’s resignation has been accepted. Pending further information, Virendra Sachdeva will act as the Delhi president.”
Performance of the BJP was particularly poor in Adesh Gupta’s own area Rajendra Nagar and neighbouring areas. Aarti Chawla from AAP won from this ward. All four BJP candidates in the neighborhood- East, West Patel Nagar, Ranjeet Nagar and Baljeet Nagar have lost to AAP.
BJP had fought tooth and nail to retain their hold over MCD. The party could not reap the benefits from its consistent and aggressive campaign against the main leaders of AAP – be it targeting Manish Sisodia on the excise duty policy or spinning a poster war on Satyendar Jain’s Tihar jail massage videos.
