NEW DELHI: Following his historic visit to the US, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Egypt for the first time since assuming office in 2014.

The invitation for the Egypt visit was extended by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi during his visit to India in January this year. He was the chief guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations.

PM Modi will land in Cairo next Saturday, June 24 and depart for New Delhi the next day.

His visit is considered crucial as both countries will engage in dialogues on defense security, new energy initiatives, and several agreements. “Apart from his talks with President Sisi, the prime minister is likely to interact with senior dignitaries from the Egyptian government, prominent Egyptian personalities, as well as the Indian community in Egypt.

Relations between India and Egypt are based on ancient trade and economic linkages, as well as cultural and deep-rooted people-to-people ties. During the state visit of President Sisi in January 2023, it was agreed to elevate the relationship to a ‘Strategic Partnership’, as per the prime minister’s office (PMO).

India and Egypt are celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations this year. Egypt has also been invited as a ‘Guest Country’ during India’s Presidency of the G-20 in 2022-23.

India and Egypt enjoy warm and friendly relations marked by civilizational, cultural, and economic linkages, as well as deep-rooted people-to-people ties. The multifaceted relationship is based on shared cultural values, a commitment to foster economic growth, collaboration in the fields of defense and security, and convergence on regional and global issues.

The two countries work closely at multilateral and international platforms. In FY 2021-22, trade was fairly balanced, with $3.74 billion in Indian exports to Egypt and $3.52 billion in imports from Egypt to India.

More than 50 Indian companies have invested around $3.15 billion in diverse sectors of the Egyptian economy, including chemicals, energy, textiles, garments, agri-business, retail, etc.
