PM Narendra Modi waves at people present at the Jewar airport site on Thursday.

GREATER NOIDA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the construction of Noida International Airport, which is also known as Jewar International Airport here and said that the double engine government of the BJP at the Centre and in state has ended the “mafia raj” in the state as it is focusing on the development of infrastructures.

After laying the foundation stone for the 1,334 hectare Jewar Airport, which after its completion will be the fifth international airport in Uttar Pradesh, Modi said:

The Jewar airport will benefit crores of people in Delhi NCR and Uttar Pradesh and it will also become the logistics gateway of northern India

Emphasising on the aircrafts repair facility in India, the Prime Minister, “Every year, we spend Rs 15,000 crore on repairs of aircraft in other countries. Now, all repairs and maintenance will be carried out here.”

He also said that the airport will boost exports of Uttar Pradesh and bring thousands of jobs to the youth of the state. “Improved air connectivity will also boost the tourism sector of the state,” he said.

Slamming the previous government of the state, the Prime Minister said, “For the first time after India’s Independence this double-engine government is giving Uttar Pradesh its due.”

Earlier, Uttar Pradesh would be criticised for bad roads, poor infrastructure, mafia, etc. Previous governments kept Uttar Pradesh poor. Today, the state is making its mark on the global stage

Targeting the previous governments in the state and at Centre, he said, “The previous governments at the Centre and the state ignored the development of western Uttar Pradesh. The previous state government wrote to the Centre to stop the Jewar airport project.”

Modi also said that the previous governments in the state would earlier announce projects but nothing would happen on the ground.

“Since the negligence costs would escalate and blame games used to be played, our government has ensured that infrastructure projects are finished on time. Otherwise, penalties will have to be paid,” he said.

The Prime Minister also focused on farmers and said earlier farmers would have to wait for years to get compensation for the lands acquired for government projects. “We have ensured they get proper rates on time,” he said.

The Prime Minister had on November 19 this year announced to repeal the three farm laws in the Winter Session of Parliament beginning November 29. The Union Cabinet on November 24 also cleared the Bill to repeal the three farm laws.

The construction work for the airport has begun, and its operations will begin by 2024. The Jewar International airport will be spread over 1,334 hectares of land and will have a capacity to serve around 1.2 crore passengers.
